Nitenmon Gate was constructed in 1618 as the gate of Toshogu Shrine (it enshrines Ieyasu Tokugawa who was the founder and first shogun of the Edo age). Toshogu Shrine was destroyed by the fire in 1642, this gate were the only structure to survived.
Passing through the Nitenmon Gate places you near the Asakusa Shrine and the eastern approach to the main hall. Originally built as the gate for the Toshogu Shrine, it was later integrated into the Senso-ji grounds. Its name translates to "Gate of the Two Guardians," honoring the two Buddhist deities enshrined in its left and right sides.
Two protective Buddhist deities stand guard. Zōchōten (the Guardian of the South) is positioned on the left, and Jikokuten (the Guardian of the East) is positioned on the right.
