Day 9 St. George's, Grenada - HAL "The Best of Grenada" Tour - River Antoine Estate

This privately owned distillery, whose processes have changed little since the 1800s, is the oldest functioning water-propelled distillery in the Caribbean. A limited quantity of Rivers rum is produced by the same methods used since the distillery opened in 1785. River Antoine (pronounced An-twyne) process begins with the crushing of sugarcane from adjacent fields with the discarded canes used as fuel to fire the boilers. The water wheel is the energy that powers the process and is from a river located about a 1 mile away. The end result is a "Slightly Overproof" rum, sold only in Grenada.
