Day 5 Santo Tomas de Castilla, Guatemala - Quirigua Archaeological Ruins

Quirigua (Key-ree-gua, accent on the last a) was at one time the crown jewel in this region. Its stone monuments carved from local sandstone have intricate carvings. The largest carved Maya stele is monument E (65-ton, 35 feet tall with 8 feet underground), dating back to 771 AD; it is the monument to the far right.
