The Tank, for the arts
The Langabud red wooden building is the oldest in Djupivogur Iceland. It’s the oldest house built in 1780.
Green Arrow artwork created by Sigurður Guðmundsson in honor of Hans Jonathan, an ensalved African-Carribean who unshackled himself and became a respected merchant in Djupivogur. Born on 12th April 1784 on constitution Hill, St. Croix, in the Danish West Indies. Died in 1827 at Borgargardur, Djupivogur.
“Eggin í Gleðivík” translates to “The Eggs in Merry Cove,” and its 34 meticulously crafted replicas pay homage to the diverse avian residents that nest in the surrounding areas of Djúpivogur. Each egg represents a unique species, echoing the town's strong ties to the natural world.
Known locally as ‘the tank and originally a storage unit for fish liver oil, this circular structure has been transformed into a cultural hub for the community. Since its renovation and reopening in 2016, the tank has become a favorite spot for musicians and artists, drawn by its exceptional acoustics and serene setting. Depending on the day’s schedule, you might be treated to an impromptu musical performance or an art exhibit, making each visit uniquely memorable.
