Day 71, Saturday, April 5 2025 - Crossing the Equator - Pollywogs to Shellbacks King Neptune ceremony

Cruising the Amazon River & Crossing the Equator – Day 71 of 133

Today we held the maritime tradition (King Neptune Ceremony) as the ship crossed the equator. As we sailed away from Brazil we celebrated with a Carnival Party with Oi Brasil.

The King Neptune ceremony on Holland America cruises, also known as the "Crossing the Line" ceremony, is a traditional naval rite of passage that celebrates a traveler's first time crossing the equator. It's a fun and festive event where "Pollywogs" (those who haven't crossed the line) are put before a judging (Captain and his officers) panel to be baked in the sun (after being slimed) or jump into the pool. After the ceremony they are inducted from pollywogs to Shellbacks. Also, all must kiss the fish before being slimed!
